In a secret location, hidden within the English countryside, a group of Codebreakers changed the course of the World War II, cracking the communications between the Nazi military and Hitler’s command centre.
Almost 80 years later, Bletchley Park has opened its doors to tell the story behind these unsung heroes at the place where it happened.
To help transform and restore The Mansion into an award-winning heritage attraction and museum, J&G, sworn to secrecy, were asked to undertake a relighting project for the site.
Bletchley Park needed reliable lighting solutions that would fulfil all the rigorous Health and Safety requirements for a public venue but also looked industrial and authentic to match the 1940’s era feel of the site.
This would take some creative solutions to match the Bletchley Park wartime aesthetic. Naturally, we took up the challenge, providing almost 50 energy efficient SP-12 large LED Bulkhead lights with a mix of clear and sandblasted pearl diffusers, finished in natural silver.
Our team gave the SP-12s a powder coating to offer an authentic finish but also seals and gaskets to make the lights even more durable. The fixtures should now last a lot longer, compared to those made in the 40’s.
The lights were installed throughout the corridors and stairwells of the site. We combined Dusk till Dawn functions with emergency battery back-up for a very safe and reliable combination. The Dusk till Dawn feature provides light automatically in darkness and the emergency battery pack ensures power to the light during cuts, ensuring a safe evacuation.
Additionally, we added DALI to the lights, so they could be controlled or dimmed to suit the atmosphere of a thoughtful museum.
This combination meant that not only did our lighting meet modern standards for Health and Safety but suited the classic look of wartime steam and steel.
Bletchley Park is a great venue for a buffet of historical facts – and now Coughtrie is a slice of that history. It was a privilege to help maintain the look and feel of wartime legacy contained in one building.
