Established in 1939 by the original Mr John Coughtrie, the Coughtrie brand is synonymous with well-engineered, sustainable products designed to withstand the test of time, technology and the most arduous of environments. Awarded the King’s Roll in 1941 for employing disabled ex-servicemen, Coughtrie still operates from the same factory in Hillington, Glasgow, as it has done for over 80 years.
Since 2009, Coughtrie has been part of the M2H Group of Companies and has undergone a transformation of its business whilst retaining the core identity of an established organisation. Today, it remains a reassuring presence providing reliability and functionality with a modern twist and a customer service focus to an established customer base.
WE BUILD TRUST NOT CLIENTS
With our luminaires boasting a life-span in excess of 25 years, the Coughtrie name has become one that customers can trust, and simultaneously the market leader in robust light fittings for arduous environments.
Team members with almost 40 years’ service have seen every generation of technology from fluorescent to LED lamps and boards. Working alongside the younger influx and by blending the old and new, these trusted hands will take the very same bases into the era of the Internet of Things.
We only work with trusted partners who portray the same passion for customer service that we are renowned for. After all, why would we sacrifice our reputation for the sake of a few pennies?
OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
With over 90% of components coming from within a 25 miles’ radius ensures that we have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry and one of the fastest order to despatch timeframes.

I have specified Coughtrie luminaires and adaptations to older versions of some of them for thirty years. I have found your luminaires well designed, robust and basically fit for purpose which has been proven by their longevity of life. I have stated many times rather flippantly that “Coughtrie luminaires are the best things to have come out of Glasgow”. I have no doubt that when the right scheme arises, I will be specifying your products again.
Just replacing our old SP6 with a modern cheap and nasty version so we can take our much loved ‘original’ to our new house! Don’t know how old our one is as it was a fixture in our outside loo when we came to our soon to be sold property. Delighted to see you are still in business.
I think I became aware of Coughtrie soon after buying a house in Glasgow in 1984 – as 2 of the SP10 units were fitted to the outside of the building. I discovered happily that the firm was in Glasgow and went to buy another bigger SP10 (150W) to put over a garage after visiting the Hillington factory (It cost £12.93 in August 1986!). I brought this one to my next house here in the South of England. I remember seeing these SP10 fittings everywhere and realised they must be the sort of good quality item specified by architects and other professionals. Pay more and get a quality item, that really lasts, and for which you can get spares years later.Just replacing our old SP6 with a modern cheap and nasty version so we can take our much loved ‘original’ to our new house! The Centrepiece of our reconstruction will be a 1950s town – meaning that alongside existing attractions depicting life in the early 19th and 20th centuries, the museum will once again include a period within living memory. Finding a supplier with heritage like Coughtrie allows us to add period details to our buildings whilst having the reliability of modern fittings.
